Pinoy faces UAE court over alleged cocaine smuggle try

A Filipino traveler on Thursday faced a United Arab Emirates court over charges he tried to smuggle 6.4 kilos of cocaine into the country last October.

The Filipino, 38, was arrested at the Dubai International Airport after the cocaine was found in his luggage, UAE news site Khaleej Times reported.

He faced trial on charges of attempting to smuggle drugs by transit before the Court of First Instance. The court is expected to issue a verdict on March 30.

In the public prosecution investigation, a police corporal said the incident occurred at 11:20 p.m. at Terminal 3 of the airport.

He said the Filipino had arrived from Brazil and was heading to Vietnam, but "raised my suspicions and I took him into the inspection room."

"When searching his luggage I found a woman’s bag in it, and noticed an unusual density around the bag’s sides,” he said.

When the corporal made a cut in those sides, he found a substance believed to be cocaine.

He said the defendant confessed it was illegal drugs and that he was smuggling it from Brazil, and was to drop it off in Vietnam – all in exchange for $3,000.

The Filipino was then referred to the General Directorate of Narcotics and placed in provisional detention. — Joel Lcosin/LBG, GMA News
