PHL embassy to issue guidebook on jobs, legal issues for UAE expats

Filipinos working in the United Arab Emirates may benefit from an upcoming 150-page guidebook to be issued by the Philippine Embassy there, a UAE news site reported Sunday.

The guidebook, in collaboration with Gulf Law, aims to give "practical" answers on issues ranging from jobs to legal issues, Gulf News reported.

“The book will provide essential information starting from pre-migration to the pre-departure orientation seminar to arrival in the host country to their return to their country. So it covers the full cycle of migration,” Philippine ambassador to UAE Grace Princesa told Gulf News.

According to the report, the guidebook is slated for publication within this year, and will be given free to Filipino expatriates. It will address common questions and provide step-by-step details on processes on:

- overseas employment
- financial literacy
- getting proper documents
- what to do when in trouble with the law

The book also touches on reintegration, and “knowing the life and shadows of overseas labor migration,” Princesa said.

Gulf Law partner lawyer Barney Almazar said many questions in the book were collated from their free legal aid sessions and seminars in the Philippine embassy and consulate-general in 2014.

Almazar said the guidebook will target the so-called five Is, or major issues Filipinos face in the UAE: indebtedness, intoxication, immorality or illegal affairs, illegal recruitment, and improper documents.

“It addresses concerns like what to do if you have a police case, it tackles the main difference between a limited and unlimited contract, how to get help from the Central Bank, how to get a birth certificate, to name a few,” he said.

Princesa added she wants the guidebook to be part of her legacy before her tour of duty ends this October. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
