Palace: Repatriating OFWs from Libya getting more difficult

Malacañang on Saturday renewed its appeal to overseas Filipino workers in strife-torn Libya to avail of repatriation now, saying the task is getting harder as the days go on.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the government is trying to cope with such challenges just to make sure OFWs in Libya can safely get home.

"Ngayon nahihirapan ang gobyerno sa logistics, wala nang commercial flights papasok like before. Ngayon mas masalimuot ang proseso ng paglabas sa kanila," she said on government-run dzRB radio.

"The challenges become greater as the days pass," she added.

Besides, she said, the Department of Foreign Affairs already declared Alert Level 4 on Libya, which calls for mandatory repatriation.

So far, she said some 4,000 Filipinos are still in Libya.

But now, she said the challenges to repatriation are mounting due to problems like the stoppage of commercial flights to and from Libya.

Valte also appealed to kin of the OFWs in Libya to help convince their loved ones to avail of repatriation.

"Huwag isaalang-alang ang kaligtasan. Importante na ligtas kayo para makasama ang ating mga mahal sa buhay... Hopefully mas maraming mag-avail ng repatriation operations natin diyan," she said.

"We make that call out to the families of OFWs in Libya to appeal to their loved ones to come home already," she added. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
