Comelec to expand online registration project to all PHL posts worldwide

Land- and sea-based OFWs everywhere will soon be able to register for the upcoming 2016 presidential election online through iRehistro.

According to Undersecretary Rafael Seguis, who heads the Department of Foreign Affairs-Overseas Voting Secretariat (DFA-OVS), the iRehistro project "will provide an alternative mode for potential registrants."

"In order to encourage new registrants, we have to offer them as many choices/options as possible so that they can select the mode of registration that best suits them," he said in a statement. "The iRehistro system is one such alternative, and a very attractive one at that."

The project was first implemented at the Philippine Embassy in Madrid in 2014 to test its capabilities in minimizing queuing time and encoding workloads inside the embassy.

Under the system, OFWs may schedule their time for registration at www.iRehistro.com or www.comelec.gov.ph, where they must fill out a form for their appointment.

Applicants must submit three copies of the form along with the following documents to the nearest foreign service post (FSP) on the time and date of the appointment:

- valid Philippine passport
- photocopy of Seaman's Book for seafarers
- the original or certified true copy of Order of Approval of application to retain or reaquire Filipino
- citizenship for dual citizens

OFWs may also find the following documents on either website:

- Application for Transfer
- Application for Reactivation
- Change/Correction of Entries
- Inclusion of Record in the Book of Voters
- Reinstatement to Voters List
- Submission of Supplementary Forms

Seguis said all 85 FSPs will carry the service, greatly benefitting OFWs who work aboard ships.

“If iRehistro system is adopted for all Posts, those whose jurisdictions include ports where ships carrying Filipino seamen dock can expect a big jump in their registration figures,” he said. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
