UP alumni in Wisconsin adopt 15 Yolanda-affected UP Tacloban students

A group of University of the Philippines alumni based in the United States has adopted 15 students of the UP Tacloban campus affected by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013.

The UP Alumni Association of Wisconsin (UPAAW) donated P120,000 to UP’s Adopt-a-Student Program, giving P8,000 each to the 15 affected students, the university said on its website.

Prof. Niel Kenneth Jamandre, officer-in-charge of the UP Diliman Office of Scholarships and Student Services (OSSS), announced the remittance of the amount last Feb. 18, the UP system said on Thursday.

UPAA Wisconsin Committee on Scholarships chairman lawyer Joselito Conti said graduating students will have priority in benefiting from the donation.

Conti also said a P10,000 donation each will be given to 13 students for the first semester of Academic Year 2015-2016.

UPAAW, via the UPAAW Scholarship, benefits financially challenged but good-standing UP students yearly, the university said.

Each beneficiary can get P39,000 per semester to complete the last two semesters of studies.

The Adopt-a-Student Program is a UP program that provides “supplementary” support to students with urgent financial needs.

“It acts as a safety net where students are given allowances to keep them studying in the University [while working] on their requirements to qualify in more comprehensive financial assistance programs,” the UP said.
