“As the first Filipino-American ever elected to this position, Sallings brings a dynamic and unique perspective to the board,” Rob Bonta of the California State Assembly said in a statement Thursday.

“Every breakthrough we make, at every level of elected office, is a huge victory for the entire community,” added Bonta, himself a Filipino-American.

Sallings, who will be sworn in on Thursday, December 11 (US time), will also be the third Asian-American to be elected for the position.

“Noelani makes history as the first Filipina-American to sit on Santa Clara's School Board. She has an immense commitment to improving the quality of education for all students,” said Ron Muriera, who heads the Filipino American National Historical Society.

Sallings was elected after a controversial election that saw sample ballots with missing candidate information in Santa Clara county.

CBS San Francisco reported that blank spots were shown on the ballots where their information should be. This was attributed to a programming error in the election management software and a mistake proofreaders were unable to pick up.

According to City Data, 38.1 percent of Santa Clara is composed of Asian Americans. It also ranks 5th on the list of Top 101 cities with the most Filipino residents.

On the other hand, Sunnyvale has an Asian population of 39.8 percent and was ranked 22nd on the list of Top 101 cities with the most Filipino residents. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
