Pinay sets big plans for Zambo del Sur after attending Morocco summit
An enterpreneur from Mindanao represented the Philippines in a three-day entrepreneurship summit in Morocco last month attended by no less than US Vice President Joe Biden.
Junaflor Ceriles, who runs a farm and water business in Zamboanga del Sur, joined 6,800 other participants in the 5th Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) held in Marrakech, Morocco, from November 19-21, a news release from the US Embassy in the Philippines said.
“The whole experience was informative and nurturing in my development as a young social entrepreneur. It gave me new ideas on how I can carry my venture to a new level,” said Ceriles, who also heads Zamboanga del Sur's Provincial Federation of Women's Organization.
Ceriles said she plans to strengthen agribusiness in her province by giving additional income to farming families and changing the “perception that farming is a low-earning profession.”
“I plan to strengthen agribusiness in my province by empowering women and youth through farming, and to introduce innovation with the help of partner agencies, and most of all, find bigger markets for their products,” she said.
In her tenure as PFWO president, Ceriles taught groups of more than 10,000 women social enterprise skills.
The GES is an initiative by US President Barack Obama that seeks to strengthen US ties with global business leaders, investors, and start-ups.
It also aims to promote “entrepreneurship on a global level especially in Africa and Arab countries,” the US embassy said.
Aside from the 6,800 participants, also in the event were 194 speakers from the US, Africa, United Arab Emirats, and Europe; 405 journalists; and 600 students.
