3 rescued Pinoy crewmen of ill-fated Korean vessel safe – DFA

The three Filipino sailors of a sunken South Korean fishing vessel are safe, while rescue efforts are ongoing for the 10 other missing crewmen from the Philippines, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday

Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose identified the Filipinos as Rowell Aljecera, Micol Sabay and Teddy Parangue Jr. They are currently aboard Russian rescue ships.

Aljecera is onboard the Zalive Zabiyaka while Sabay and Parangue are on board the Karolina-77, Jose said.

“They are being attended to and being given proper medical attention,” Jose told a press briefing.

He said the rescued Filipinos will remain on board the Russian ships while search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Oryong 501’s crew consist of 35 Indonesians, 13 Filipinos, 11 South Koreans and one Russian inspector.  Reports said at least one person died.

On Tuesday, South Korea’s Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se called Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario to assure the Philippine government that rescue efforts are ongoing for the missing crewmen, including 10 other Filipinos, of the ill-fated Oryong 501 that sank in the Bering Sea off Russia’s far eastern Chukotka region, Jose said.

“Search is being conducted without let-up despite the poor weather condition that continue to hamper operations,” Jose said.

The Philippine Embassy in Moscow has dispatched a two-man team to the area’s marine rescue center of Russia’s Federal Agency of Sea and River Transportation, which is coordinating the search and rescue efforts.

Manila’s honorary Consul General in Vladivostok was also instructed to assist the survivors and monitor the fate of the missing Filipino crew members in coordination with Russian authorities, Jose added.

The Philippine Embassy in Seoul, on the other hand, is in touch with the South Korean government for updates on the search and rescue efforts.

Jose, meanwhile, said the DFA is awaiting the decision of the Filipino survivors if they want to be repatriated to the Philippines.

“It’s their decision or (their) company’s. Whatever is their decision we will assist them,” he said.  —KBK/RSJ, GMA News
