India eases visa rules for Pinoys, others

The Indian government has eased rules for foreign travelers, including Filipinos, who may now receive their tourist visa upon arrival in the country, reports said.

India's newly-launched Tourist Visa on Arrival (TVOA) service covers tourists from 43 countries, including the Philippines, Gulf News reported Wednesday.

According to a separate report on The Times of India, travelers from the 43 countries may now apply for and get their tourist visa online. It said this new system would entitle the travelers to enter India anytime within 30 days of the approval.

The electronic travel authorization — to be sent by Indian authorities via e-mail — will entitle the prospective tourist to a 30-day stay in India.

Upon arrival, the visitor has to present a printed copy of the authorization to the immigration authorities, who would then stamp the entry into the country.

The reports said tourists will be allowed to enter and depart from India's nine international airports, namely Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram.

The TVOA is non-extendable and non-convertable.

The Times of India report said India launched the new scheme to boost tourism from selected countries starting in January.

It said the TVOA is available to foreigners whose sole objective of visiting India is recreation, sightseeing, short duration medical treatment, casual business visit, casual visit to meet friends or relatives etc. It is not valid for any other purpose/activities.

Other countries covered by the new scheme include Australia, the United States, Japan, Germany, Finland, Russia, and Thailand. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
