Pinay nurse nominated for 2014 Press Ganey Nurse of the Year Award

You should have seen the look on her face.

When Maritess De La Cruz learned that AdvantageCare Physicians had nominated her for the 2014 Press Ganey Nurse of the Year Award, her expression was priceless.

At a surprise ceremony held at the Lincoln Square medical office, her initial uncertainty over what all the fuss was about quickly changed to surprise and delight as Rob Warburton, AVP of Business Intelligence, delivered the good news along with a framed certificate commemorating her nomination and an invitation to attend the Press Ganey National Care Conference where the winner will be announced.

R.N. De La Cruz is the first ACP nurse to be nominated for this prestigious award, given annually to recognize an outstanding direct care nurse who has gone above and beyond in his or her role and has demonstrated care innovation, transformation and collaboration that supports an exceptional patient experience.

Eveth Green, regional nurse director for the ACP Manhattan region, praised Maritess’ warm and caring approach to nursing.

“Ms. De La Cruz makes an extra effort to bring a smile to the patients’ face,” Eveth wrote in her letter of nomination. “She is able to strongly empathize with very sick patients and their families while remaining calm herself, thinking clearly and rationally and controlling her emotions.”

For her part, Maritess said: “No one can teach you how to be compassionate to people.”

“We give high quality, cost-effective care with good care coordination with members of the family and the community,” she added. “This is a validation of my hard work.”

A nurse for more than 20 years who consistently earns high Press Ganey scores, Maritess first received her nursing license in her native Philippines and expanded her nursing skills while employed throughout Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

“Through my nursing knowledge and education, I know how it feels to be in the patient’s shoes when they go to the hospital or they come to the practice,” said Maritess, who is from Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, and is a graduate of Riverside College.

“I love to be with people and patients. This is like second nature to me,” she added.

Maritess, who joined ACP in 2011 and works at ACP’s Lincoln Square offices, was also commended by Dr. William Gillespie, president and CEO of AdvantageCare Physicians.

“Maritess has stood out amongst her peers and proven herself to be wholly dedicated to our mission — to be the preferred care destination for our patients and the communities we serve,” he wrote in his letter of nomination.

“We are extremely impressed with her commitment to learning and improvement.”

“This means so much to me, for my family, and for the practice,” Maritess said. “Patients know that we have the best team here. This is the proudest moment of my career,” she added. –Filipino Reporter
