US-based lawyer Reuben Seguritan named 2015 Independence Day Parade Grand Marshal
The Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) Board of Directors unanimously voted for noted area lawyer and community leader Reuben S. Seguritan to be the Grand Marshal for next year’s Philippine Independence Day Parade in New York commemorating the 117th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence.
Seguritan was the founding President of PIDCI when it was incorporated on February 14, 2002. He also co-founded the Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI), a leading New York organization that provides social services to disadvantaged Filipinos.
The 2015 Philippine Independence Day Parade Grand Marshal Reuben S. Seguritan was presented to the community by the Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) at the official residence of the Philippine Consul General in New York, Ambassador Mario L. de Leon, Jr. at a dinner and merrymaking-in-the season event last Monday, December 8, 2014, attended by close to 100 community who’s who.
He has served as general counsel of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), the Association of Philippine Physicians in America (APPA), the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) and PNA New York, the Philippine Medical Association in America (PMAA) and other national and local organizations.
Seguritan has distinguished himself in his profession and his volunteer service to the community especially his passion for advocacy issues that greatly impact the community that he serves.
He was among the first batch of recipients one of the highly coveted Philippine Presidential awards from President Fidel V. Ramos, for “contributions which have significantly benefited a sector or community in the Philippines, or advanced the cause of overseas Filipino communities”.
His earlier award was conferred at the time of President Corazon C. Aquino when the awards were given under the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) of the Office of the President of the Philippines. It was the late President Aquino who transformed the four CFO awards into Presidential Awards when she issued an Executive Order designating the awards as such and conferred every two years in MalacaƱan Palace.
Seguritan is also a prolific writer having published numerous articles in law journals and other publicationstouching on immigration and discrimination. He authored We Didn’t Pass Through the Golden Door, a book of essays on the plight of Filipinos overseas who have been treated, in his own words,as “objects of discrimination and legal oppression”.
He has been a columnist for community newspapers such as the Filipino Reporter; and The Filipino Express, Hawaii-Filipino Chronicle,The Filipino Catholic and One Philippines,for these latter four publications his column appears to the present day.
Seguritan has maintained a highly successful law practice in New York going on 40 years defending and promoting the welfare and interests of his kababayan and their friends among whom are nurses, teachers, scientists, World War II veterans and many others.
The 2015 Independence Day Parade Grand Marshal has also kept his quintessential role in the community both as a lawyer and an advocate receiving other awards like one of 20 Outstanding Filipino Americans conferred in Washington, DC; the Filipinas Magazine Achievement Award for Community Service given in California; and an Outstanding Young Man of America award, among many, many others.
He received his bachelor’s degrees in law and political science from the University of the Philippines (UP).
Seguritan is married to Corazon Magsuci Seguritan, a board certified pediatrician. They have two sons, Frederick and Reuben Anthony. —Press Release
