DFA bares new drug trafficking modus victimizing Pinoys

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday reiterated its warning to Filipinos not to allow themselves to be used in carrying out drug-trafficking operations following the discovery of a new modus operandi being used by African drug syndicates.

The DFA gave the warning after a Filipino was recently caught smuggling five kilos of crystal methamphetamine out of Ningbo, China.

In an advisory, the DFA said the Filipino, who was arrested at the airport while waiting for his flight to Malaysia, was a victim of a drug syndicate who recruited him in the Philippines.

“The latest modus operandi of drug syndicates is to recruit travelers who would transport the illegal drugs out of China,” the DFA said, adding that “several Filipino travelers” have been arrested in China recently for possession of illegal drugs.

“The Filipino recruits travel to Guangzhou from Manila where African members of the drug syndicates give them packages containing the illegal substance,” the DFA said.

It said the recruits are then asked to travel to Ningbo or Shenzhen where they are to take a flight to Kuala Lumpur.

“In at least two instances, minors where asked to accompany the Filipino recruits during their travel,” the DFA said.

It reminded Filipino tourists and migrants of the harsh penalties dealt to drug smugglers in China.

A number of Filipinos had already been executed in China over drug offenses.

The DFA also advised travelers to comply with pre-departure ceremonies by Philippine immigration authorities, and to be wary in accepting packages intended to be delivered to the Philippines or other transit destinations. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
