Govt assistance ready for kin of Pinoy crew of sunken Korean vessel
The government will provide assistance to the families of the 13 Filipino seafarers on board the ill-fated Korean fishing vessel Oryong 501, which sank off Russia after encountering big waves last December 1.
The assistance will be in the form of financial compensation and counseling, according to a news release from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Thursday.
Of the 13 Filipinos who were onboard the fishing vessel when it sank, three had been rescued while one has been confirmed dead. The rest remained missing as of Thursday afternoon.
According to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz, proper compensation will be given by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to the rescued workers in accordance with their employment contract.
The Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration (OWWA), on the other hand, will offer the families of the Filipino crewmen counseling and other forms of assistance.
Baldoz also instructed OWWA to coordinate with the manning agencies that deployed the seafarers.
“The OWWA will extend all necessary assistance to the seafarers and their families in this time of a tragedy,” she said.
POEA administrator Hans Leo Cacdac, for his part, said upon their arrival in Manila, the three survivors will undergo a mandatory post-employment medical examination to determine any injury that they may have sustained during the sinking of their vessel.
The OFWs shall also be paid compensation equivalent to one-month basic salary for loss of employment, compensation for loss of personal effects due to marine peril, and the balance of wages consisting of earned wages and leave pay.
Baldoz also instructed Labor Attache to South Korea Felicitas Bay to closely coordinate with Korean authorities regarding on-going efforts to locate and rescue the missing Filipinos. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
