DFA to Pinoy travelers: Bring enough cash when going to Greece

Filipino travelers to Greece were advised by the government on Thursday to bring enough cash as the Greek debt crisis resulted in money controls.

“Due to imposed capital controls and the closure of banks, travelers are advised to have enough cash to cover their stay in Greece and also for emergencies and unexpected expenses,” the DFA said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, in its advisory, maintained “it is still safe for tourists to travel to Greece.”

However, Filipino travelers are informed that strikes and demonstrations may occur mostly in the center of Athens, especially in Syntagma Square and in front of the Parliament Building.

“Filipinos are advised to refrain from being within the vicinity of these gatherings,” the DFA said.

With the recent developments in Greece, the Philippine Embassy in Athens is advising the Filipino community in Greece and all Filipinos who wish to travel to Greece to closely monitor the news.

Credit cards continue to work, reports said, but small establishments and hotels refused to honor them and prefer cash payments. There is also a limit for ATM withdrawals.

According to Agence France Presse, ATM withdrawals in Greece are limited to just €60 ($67) per day for Greek bank card holders. Foreign cards are not capped the same way, but several embassies have warned their citizens to bring enough cash for their trip as ATM money stocks could run out.

Greece uses the Euro as its currency.

For emergency situations, Filipinos are advised to contact the embassy thru its mobile number (0030) 697-4319-539 and landline (0030) 210-6721-883.

The embassy is located at:  26 Antheon Street, Paleo Psychico 154 52 Athens, Greece. -NB/GMA News
