PHL, Indonesian authorities to meet after Ramadan on Mary Jane Veloso case – DFA

Officials from the Philippines and Indonesia are scheduled to meet after Ramadan to discuss “developments” on the case of death convict Mary Jane Veloso, whose execution was stayed in April following appeals from the Manila government.

At the same time, Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose belied claims of a local migrant worker group that Veloso is among the new batch of death row prisoners who will be executed by firing squad.

“These claims of certain groups are baseless and mere speculations,” Jose told a press briefing Monday. “Our embassy in Jakarta has not received word from the Indonesian government about this.”

Veloso, 30, narrowly escaped death after the Indonesian government unexpectedly ordered a stay in her execution following President Benigno Aquino III's last minute appeal to counterpart Jokowi Widodo to turn her into a witness.

A meeting among officials of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of Justice and the Indonesian Attorney General’s Office and Ministry of law is set to take place “in the coming weeks,” Jose said.

The Ramadan ends later this week.

The meeting, Jose explained, is intended to update Indonesia on the progress of the case filed against Veloso’s trafficker, who was recently charged with illegal recruitment, human smuggling, and estafa.

“The fact there is a meeting being scheduled means there is no other plan (intended) for Mary Jane,” Jose said, adding “Indonesia will notify us first” if the execution will be carried out.

Veloso, who entered Indonesia from Malaysia as a tourist, was arrested by authorities in Yogyakarta in 2010 for possession of 2.6 kilograms of heroin hidden and wrapped in foil inside the lining of her luggage.

She maintained her innocence, insisting she was tricked into bringing the tainted suitcase by her Filipino recruiter. — RSJ, GMA News
