DFA says Pacquiao to meet Mary Jane Veloso on Friday

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has confirmed the scheduled visit of Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao to convicted drug convict Mary Jane Veloso in an Indonesian prison on Friday.

In a text message to GMA News Online, DFA Spokesperson Charles Jose said the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will assist the congressman in facilitating the visit.

"The Embassy is coordinating with the Indonesian side to facilitate the visit," Jose wrote.

Pacquiao left for Indonesia with his wife Jinkee, Sarangani's Vice Governor, on Tuesday. The congressman, now in his second term, is a vice chairman of the House committee on migrant workers' affairs.

Migrante International said in a statement that Pacquiao will meet with Veloso at 8 am, Indonesia time until 10 am.

They said his visit will coincide with a dialogue between the #SaveMaryJane Alliance, Veloso's parents, and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to discuss the Department of Justice's (DOJ) progress with the criminal case against the OFW's alleged recruiters.

The DOJ has found probable cause to file illegal recruitment, qualified trafficking, and estafa charges against alleged illegal recruiters Kristina Sergio, Julius Lacanilao, and a certain "Ike" on Thursday.

Prosecutor General Claro Arellano said Veloso's "detailed narration" of the events in 2010 and evidence convincingly proved the respondent's actions and overtook their "bare denial" of illegal recruitment. -NB, GMA News
