Young Fil-Am chef impresses Obama with ‘Barack-amole’ dish

United States President Barack Obama gave a young Filipino-American chef a huge shout-out during his speech at the White House's Kid's State Dinner on July 11 for her quirky — and punny — dish.

“I particularly am impressed by the Barack-amole,” a report on SF Gate quoted Obama as praising Aria Pelaez's work during the feast hosted by US First Lady Michelle Obama.

Pelaez's dish, named the California Rainbow Taco with Mic-Kale Obama Slaw and Barack-amole, won the honor of being served to the couple after it was picked as California's winner for the Health Lunchtime Challenge.

The challenge, now on its fourth year, is an initiative by Mrs. Obama under the Let's Move Anti-Childhood Obesity campaign. It awarded 55 winners with a lunch featuring a selection of the winning dishes, a special performance by the cast of Disney's Aladdin, and a visit to the White House Kitchen Garden.

separate report on ABC 7 Chicago said Pelaez was enthused to meet Michelle Obama, whom she praised for helping "other kids learn that it's not good to just to eat junk food all day."

Her mother Jenna told SF Gate that her daughter learned how to make healthy food because of the junk food and chips her classmates packed for lunch.

She said the challenge "hit home" for them because of their long struggle with packing healthy lunches.

Political Blotter listed down the ingredients for the taco, which Pelaez candidly described as a result of her family's "bland tacos." Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
