Pinay in UAE paralyzed after workout

A 42-year-old Filipina saleswoman in the United Arab Emirates needs help to get home after she suffered a stroke six months ago and has since been in a coma, a UAE news site reported Thursday.

Elvira Cadiz Malveda, 42, suffered a paralytic stroke after working out at a gym in Abu Dhabi and was rushed to the Shaikh Khalifa Medical City, Gulf News reported.

She was transferred to Al Rahba Hospital on Jan. 15 and has since been confined there, the report said.

Presently, Malveda cannot move and has to be fed via a tube.

Citing medical reports, the Gulf News report said Malveda may have suffered a brain hemorrhage, with doctors declaring her a quadriplegic.

"She worked as a saleswoman and was very active and healthy. Now she responds to her surroundings only by blinking her eyes. It breaks my heart to see her in this condition," said one of her two sisters, Marilyn Pascual, who works as a nurse in the UAE.

But she added their worry now is that she has to be taken home and will require long-term care - and the hospital wants to discharge her by next week.

Pascual herself has to take care of a sick husband and a special needs child. She said her husband is on life support and suffers from pulmonary fibrosis.

“Most of what I earn is spent on the treatment of my husband and daughter. But I cannot abandon my sister who is single and has nobody to depend on,” she said.

"I am counting on the generosity of the people of this country to help me and my family in this dire situation,” she added.  Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
