Over 90,000 registered Pinoy voters in HK urged to participate in 2016 polls

HONG KONG — The Philippine Consulate General and the various representatives of Filipino groups here are joining efforts to convince the over 94,000 registered Filipino voters in the territory to vote in the 2016 elections.

Data from the PCG showed that the Filipino community in Hong Kong has the largest number of active voters—83,118—among Filipino communities overseas. Including new registrants, the number reaches 94, 231 as of June 2015.

In a meeting last June 29, Consul General Bermardita Catalla appealed to the representatives of the Filipino community to help the PCG in encouraging more Filipinos there to register as overseas absentee voters.

"Kung pwede ho sana mas palakasin ang registration," she said. "Importante na nandito sila at nakakapag-desisyon sila sa leadership ng ating bayan."

The Filipino community in Hong Kong ranks 11th in the number of new registrants with 11,113.

Catalla, meanwhile, admitted that the Commission on Elections' failure to send voters' IDs to those who have previously registered is not helping in convincing those who have yet to register to go out and register.

She clarified that a voter's ID is not a requirement in voting in Hong Kong.

"Iyon naman po, kahit may ID, kahit wala, basta nakalista ang pangalan ay pwedeng bumoto," Catalla said.

Leaders of the Filipino community told Catalla that the more important task is to get both new and old registrants to actually vote.

Voters' registration for the 2016 elections is ongoing until October 31, 2015. In Hong Kong, it is being held at the PCG in United Centre in Admiralty. —KBK, GMA News
