CBCP exec seeks continued prayers for Mary Jane Veloso

A Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines official over the weekend sought continued prayers for Mary Jane Veloso, the overseas Filipino worker facing execution for a drug-related offense in Indonesia.
 
CBCP Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People chairman and Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos said this is even after the Department of Justice decided to pursue charges against Veloso's recruiters.
 
“Let us as one people and continually pray for Mary Jane,” Santos said, according to an article on the CBCP news site.
 
"We pray constantly that Indonesian Attorney General Office will accept, rely their decision with DOJ filing of criminal charges against the Sergios, and eventually grant absolute clemency to Mary Jane, [so that she] be saved from execution," he added.
 
Earlier, the DOJ approved the filing of illegal recruitment, estafa, and human trafficking charges against Maria Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao.
 
Sergio and Lacanilao were accused of duping Veloso into bringing heroin into Indonesia.
 
According to Santos, the DOJ's decision "is a solid and substantial evidence in favor of Mary Jane’s case."
 
He also described it as "tangible proof that she is an innocent victim," and that Veloso was "falsely promised and abused by drug couriers.”
 
Last weekend, Filipino boxing champ and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao and wife Jinkee visited Veloso in Indonesia and prayed with her. —Joel Locsin/KG, GMA News

Pixabay MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has expanded its list of medicines which are exempt from the value added tax (VAT). Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 17-2024 released by the tax bureau exempted 21 medications following the endorsement of the Food and Drug Administration. The VAT-exempted medications on the list are for conditions such as cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, kidney disease, mental illness and tuberculosis.
