DOJ: Cases vs. Mary Jane Veloso’s recruiters resolved before Ramadan’s end

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is set to resolve before the end of Ramadan next week the criminal complaints lodged against Ma. Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao, two of the alleged illegal recruiters of overseas Filipino worker Mary Jane Veloso.

Prosecutor General Claro Arellano, chief of the National Prosecution Service, told reporters that Assistant State Prosecutor Susan Azarcon, who conducted a preliminary investigation, has already submitted to him her findings on the charges of illegal recruitment, human trafficking, and estafa against Sergio and Lacanilao.

"We are now reviewing the resolution, and we will release it probably within this week," said Arellano.

Arellano's assurance came after the Veloso family last week appealed to the DOJ to finally resolve the complaints against Sergio and Lacanilao.

In an interview with GMA News Online, Veloso's sister Maritess Veloso last week expressed fear that her sister might again be scheduled for execution after the Muslim observance of Ramadan ends on July 17, if the Philippine government fails to resolve in time the cases against her alleged recruiters.

"Ipu-push namin sa Department of Justice na madaliin na ang kaso kasi nag-aalala kami na itong pagkatapos ng Ramadan, maga-announce na ang Indonesia ng mga bibitayin uli. Ayaw naman namin mapasama si Mary Jane doon," Maritess said.

"Kapag hindi nila minadali ito, kapag nag-announce sila, baka kasama na si Mary Jane doon," added, Maritess, who joined a Thanksgiving Mass at the Ermita Catholic Church in Manila last week to commemorate the second month since Mary Jane was given temporary reprieve.

Ramadan started last June 18 and will end on July 17.

Maritess said their lawyers informed them it was customary in Indonesia for the government to make announcements involving their inmates after Ramadan.

Maritess feared the Indonesian government, especially its attorney general, might grow "impatient" over the slow resolution of the cases.

"Kahit sabihin natin matapang at buo ang loob niya, siyempre gusto pa rin niyang makauwi. So kahit papaano, kahit sino lumagay sa katayuan niya may takot na mararamdaman. Siguro nagwo-worry siya na baka mainip [ang Indonesian government]," said Maritess. -NB, GMA News
