Two-day conference set for Pinoy LGBTs in Vancouver

Filipino lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders and queers (LGBTQ) in Vancouver will have the chance to share their stories and tackle issues facing their community in a two-day conference set later this month.

Organized by the Philippine Women Centre of BC (PWC-BC), the conference dubbed "Strength, Struggle, Stories: LGBTQ National Consultative Forum" will be held from October 24 to 25 at the SFU Harbour center in Vancouver.

Sponsored by the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at the Simon Frasier University and Congress of Progressive Filipino Canadians, the forum will bring in experts, academics, artists and activists to confer over the "experiences and realities" of Filipino-Canadian LGBTQ community.

The forum will also facilitate panels, consultative workshops, and story-sharing to document these concerns.

PWC-BC encouraged LGBTQ persons and allies to bring their families to register and attend the event. [Register here.]

Despite global research by The Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project indicating a high tolerance for LGBTQ in the Philippinesreligious leaders and the government have yet to make moves to acknowledge nor accept same-sex marriage, a legal right approved in 17 other countries.

Similarly, an anti-discrimination bill filed in 2011 was met with disapproval by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), which said it is wrong for LGBT's to consider themselves "disadvantaged".

“The elderly, the handicapped, and the poor... These people are disadvantaged not by their own choice. But the third sex, they choose this. How can you give protection to a choice like that?” said CBCP lawyer Jo Imbong in an earlier reportRie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
