Macarayan was recognized last Sept. 30 for her work in assessing health systems in low- and middle-income countries, and for her activist work in promoting health equity and universal health coverage.

In her profile on the Social Media Awards website, she said social media was a powerful way of sharing health findings and can help inform mindsets on healthcare.

"I'll definitely be working hard to be the voice of health not only for the many Filipinos who are disadvantaged in accessing proper healthcare but also for the many others all across the world who may never had the chance to see a doctor," she wrote.

The Young Leader Award recognizes "the best use of social media" by individuals under 30 years in sharing developments in health systems.

Filipino nurse Alvyn Cloyd Dakis was also nominated for the Young Leader Award, receiving 41 endorsements for his social media advocacy on the Reproductive Health Bill.

Meanwhile, Mulat Pinoy - Kabataan News Network (MP-KNN) was the sole Filipino nominee for the Civil Society Organization Award, which recognizes “organizations or network that best employs social media to engage civil society in health systems-related discussion.”

The Third Global Symposium on Health Systems Research was held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 3 and revolved around the science and practice of people-centered health systems. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
