Five Filipinos perished in a vehicular accident in Qatar Monday night, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday.

Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose, however, said a companion of the five Filipinos survived the accident, which happened near Hamad International Airport.

“The three fatalities are a family based in Qatar while the other two are Saudi Arabia-based nurses who are visiting Qatar during the Eid al-Adha holidays,” Jose told a press briefing in Manila.

The survivor, a nurse in Saudi Arabia who is related to the Qatar-based family, was pronounced “out of danger” and recuperating at Hamad hospital, Jose said.

He declined to identify the victims pending clearance from their immediate family.

report on Gulf Times, citing an unnamed Philippine embassy official who visited the Hamad hospital mortuary, said the bodies were "charred beyond recognition."

It said the victims' car caught fire after being hit by another vehicle near the airport on the Corniche-Wakra highway. It was not known whether the victims were going to the airport to send off somebody or to receive someone. —Michaela del Callar/KBK, GMA News
