Palace reiterates appeal to Pinoys in HK not to join rallies

Although it maintained it is ready to help them if they get in trouble, Malacañang appealed anew Saturday to Filipinos in Hong Kong not to take part in the protest and mass actions there.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong is ready to extend assistance to Filipinos affected by the mass actions.

"Hindi na po batas ng ating bansa ang umiiral doon kundi ‘yung batas ng lugar kung nasaan po sila. At lagi naman po natin silang pinapaalalahanan na sumunod din doon sa mga alituntunin, and to stay away from any acts that might get them into trouble with the law or with the authorities there," she said on government-run dzRB radio.

She cited reports indicating the tension in Hong Kong is worsening as pro-democracy groups clash with "anti-occupy" protesters.

Valte said overseas Filipino workers may get into trouble if they join the protests since Hong Kong law will be applied to them once authorities round up participants.

"We continue to coordinate and to keep our lines of communication open with the Filipino community because our consulate there in Hong Kong will be ready to render assistance should there be any instance na kailangan po ito," she said.

However, she said that while the Philippine government has not issued any travel advisory, Filipino tourists must be aware of their surroundings once they are in Hong Kong. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
