OWWA help assured for kin of Pinay who died in HK freak accident

Family members of Racquel Fortes Espinar, the Filipino domestic helper who died in a freak accident in Hong Kong, are set to receive benefits from the Overseas Workers Welfare Association (OWWA).

Espinar was napping with her five-year-old ward on the morning of October 4 when a heavy cabinet fell on her. She was brought to a hospital from the apartment of her employer at Mau Yip Road, Tseung Kwan, but was pronounced dead-on-arrival.

Espinar's family will receive death and burial benefits worth P220,000, according to OWWA. Since she was an active member, her family is also eligible for the OWWA Education and Livelihood Assistance Program (ELAP).

If they qualify, they stand to receive a livelihood assistance of P15,000 and educational assistance of P5,000 for elementary students; P8,000 for high school; and P10,000 for college until the beneficiary finishes their degree.

OWWA has yet to receive repatriation details from the Philippine Embassy in Hong Kong regarding Espinar's remains. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
