Family demands thorough investigation into death of loved one in Saudi Arabia

TULUNAN, North Cotabato - With high spirits and the dream to help her family, Marry Ann Laniog Gemotra left this town to work abroad last April. Though she was sad to see her two children weeping as she left, Gemotra went to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to work as a domestic helper in the home of a prominent banker.

There, her employer allegedly maltreated her and threatened to kill her, according to Gemotra in a series of text messages to her sister Jing back in Tulunan.

Gemotra told her sister that there where closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in every corner of her employer's house, including in Gemotra's room and comfort room.

According to a message posted on the “Justice for Marry Ann Laniog Gemotra” Facebook page, she was also accused of stealing money from her employer.

In late September, Gemotra's family learned that she died on September 19—supposedly by suicide.

Gemotra's family, however, are not convinced that she killed herself, and have demanded a thorough investigation to determine the cause of her untimely death.

Gemotra was legally recruited by a recruitment agency accredited by the Overseas Workers Welfare Office (OWWA) during a job fair in Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat in April.

“We demand thorough investigations in this incident to give justice to the family of Marry Ann Gemotra,” Tulunan mayor Lani Candolada told this writer in text messages.

According to Candolada, she is coordinating with the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh, OWWA and the recruitment agency to shed light on the incidents leading to Gemotra's death in Riyadh.

Candolada also said she is helping the family with the repatriation of Gemotra's remains back to her hometown. — BM, GMA News
