HK raises minimum wage for foreign domestic workers

Good news for Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong — the minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers there has been raised to HK$4,110 (P23,799).

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong said late Tuesday the Hong Kong government also announced an increase in food allowance for foreign domestic helpers there.

In a post on its Facebook page, the consulate general said the Minimum Allowable Wage (MAW) will go up by HK$100 from HK$4,010 to HK$4,110 a month—a 2.5-percent increase.

Food allowance—for employers who choose to provide their workers with an allowance instead of free food—will increase by HK$44 to HK$964 from HK$920 a month.

This is an increase of 4.8 percent, the Consulate General said.

However, it also said these new rates will apply to all contracts signed on or after October 1, 2014.

"Employment contracts signed on or after 1 October 2014 shall have a MAW of HK$4,110 indicated in Item 5 (a) of the Employment Contract. Should employers grant a food allowance in lieu of free food, Item 5 (b) of the Employment Contract must reflect the amount of HK$964," it said.

Contracts signed on or before September 30, 2014 with the previous MAW of HK$4,010 per month and food allowance of not less than HK$920 per month will be processed by the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

But it said the applications should reach the HK Immigration Department on or before October 28, so employers can send the signed contracts to ImmD for completion of the application procedures. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
