POEA: No processing of returning workers to 3 Ebola-affected countries

Citing the continued threat of the Ebola Virus Disease, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration will hold the processing of Filipinos returning to three West African countries affected by the disease.

In Advisory No. 21, POEA administrator Hans Leo Cacdac said: With this continuing development and with the Department of Foreign Affairs announcement to impose Alert Level 3 in mid-November, the POEA shall maintain no processing of returning workers to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, he said in an Oct. 17 advisory.

Also, he said the policy will stand "until proper coordination with DFA and Department of Health to ensure documentary requirements for processing provide measures that guarantee OFW protection."

Earlier, the POEA undertook other efforts to help Filipino seafarers avoid getting the Ebola Virus Disease, by disseminating a circular on how to Ebola prevention.

The circular by the International Maritime Organization was aimed at both seafarers and manning agencies.

Last August, the POEA issued Memorandum Circular No. 07, outlining guidelines for seafarers and manning agencies in taking precautions against EVD infection.

At the time, the POEA Governing Board banned the deployment on newly-hired OFWs to Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other countries that may be EVD-contaminated. — Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
