Pinay teen Marlisa Punzalan wins ‘X Factor Australia’
Another Filipino has made the country proud by winning in a prestigious singing competition abroad.
Marlisa Punzalan, 15, bested two other contestants to emerge as winner in this year's “X Factor Australia” in the grand finals held Monday.
For the finals, Punzalan competed against Dean Ray and Brothers 3. She was mentored by former Boyzone member Ronan Keating.
"Thank you so much, everyone who voted and everyone who supported me, thank you so much. I couldn't have gotten this far without out. Thank you so so so much. I can't thank you enough. Thank you so much, I love you all!" Punzalan, a daughter of two Filipino migrants in Australia, said in a video message to her supporters.
For her last performance, Punzalan sang “Titanium.”
On the show's final performance night on Sunday, Punzalan received a standing ovation from the judges for her cover of the Beatles' "Yesterday," which was one of the three songs she performed.
Punzalan first belted the Beatles classic during her audition.
Aside from "Yesterday," Punzalan also sang "Stand By You" and "Never Be the Same," which she did with Australian R&B and pop singer Jessica Mauboy.
Punzalan was the only Filipino performer who made it to the finals.
Girl group Trill, composed of Filipina teenagers, was eliminated in the show's first live show.
Solo singers Jal Joshua, Erin Miranda, Justin Vasquez and Mary Ann van der Horst, meanwhile, were eliminated during the elimination rounds.
