POEA suspends 4 recruitment firms for violating HSW rules

Four recruitment agencies were preventively suspended for allegedly circumventing government regulation on recruiting and deploying Filipino household service workers (HSWs).

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration said the four were liable for misrepresentation when they submitted documents of the applicants with different job titles.

In a news release, POEA administrator Hans Leo Cacdac identified the four agencies as:

- Easyway International Recruitment Agency
- Marie Gold International Manpower Services
- LBH International Placement Agency
- Chosen Divine Mercy Manpower Services

He said the order of preventive suspension seeks to prevent the recruitment agencies and foreign employers from recruiting more prospective overseas Filipino workers while the investigation is still ongoing.

Investigation showed the agencies deployed domestic helpers using a different visa, which the POEA said is a ploy used by some agencies sending HSWs to United Arab Emirates, which acquired visas for office clerks, cleaners, cooks, beauticians, and sales persons.

Following this, Cacdac advised HSWs wanting to work overseas not to accept visas indicating a position other than of a domestic helper so they can avoid abuse and exploitation.

“HSWs who are deployed using another visa are most likely not ready to work as a household help because they have not undergone the process of training and certification and language and culture orientation,” he said. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
